Project Description

Liquid cooler for 6 kW Ferrari e-mobility inverter power pack

The Challenge

E-mobility is mostly based on AC motors since they offer higher efficiency when compared to DC motors. However, on board battery packs deliver direct current. During this conversion a substantial amount of energy is lost into heat which must be extracted to prevent system failure.

Solution

For the inverter we are using double sided cooling packages. To extract the large amount of heat, we proposed a liquid cooling solution consisting of three parallel channels.  The inverters are sandwiched inbetween the cooling channels. One issue that might appear for long cooling channels is a switch from turbulent to laminar flow characteristics – which would have detrimental effects on the heat transfer. To prevent this, we integrated a turbulator structure. It helps to sustain a high level of turbulence (and thereby heat transfer) along the whole cooling channel to deliver superior performance. When compared to similar designs on the market we were able to reduce the junction temperature by 22 °C.
